Holding a PhD in Philosophy from Paris I University, Panthéon-Sorbonne, and nationally certified as an adjunct professor in Aesthetics (section 18), Cécile Marie-Castanet is also a museum curator, an art critic, a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), and a certified Art Professor for the Cultural branch of the Territorial Civil Service Bureau. Her publications often take up Bernard Lamarche-Vadel’s view of art criticism, which he had famously called “the soundtrack to contemporary art”.
Her research on the typology of speech, on the question of the device or method employed and on its staging notably began with her research on the works of the painter Martin Barré and those of the above-mentioned writer and art critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel.
As curator, she has managed the artistic and administrative teams at the Triage Art Center (Centre d’art le Triage) in Nanterre (2002-2006), has taught graduate classes on “The Art of Exhibition and Stage Design” at the University of Lorraine (2006-2014), and has done extensive work with Nordic countries.
She also was at the origin of the publication of the Authors’ Portraits (Portraits d’auteurs) collection, a Marval publication devoted to writers and photographers.
In addition, she has served as president of the National Association of Art Professors (CNEEA) from 2005 to 2014, and she has participated in think-tanks on ways to reform and improve college-level art education in France and to improve the recognition and administrative status of college-level art professors.
